When you think of a festive getaway, it's easy to get sidetracked by New York. A veritable hotbed of culture, the Big Apple is home to some of the world’s most famous landmarks, architecture, parks, art, food and theatre, as well as the most incredible sporting, musical and retail experiences imaginable. It transforms itself for the festive season with twinkling lights, iconic ice-skating locales and unique gifting opportunities, making it a dream Christmas getaway.

Like NYC, you’ll find a diverse mix of cultures and traditions in Kuala Lumpur, with Malays, Chinese and Indian locals all happily cohabiting this magical city. Foodies will be in seventh heaven – tuck into a huge array of delectable dishes reflecting the local population, from mouthwatering traditional Malay cuisine, to regional Chinese feasts and warming Indian curries.

Pick from elegant rooftop dining with sweeping views in Jalan Binjai or Jalan Pinang (Fuego is great for tapas, or enjoy a meat feast at Marble 8), or head to Jalan Alor for street food like you’ve never experienced before.

It’s a great place to scratch that festive shopping itch, too. Find designer deals at Pavilion KL in Bukit Bintang, or pick up thoughtful treasures and souvenirs at Central Market. It might not offer winter snow or ice-skating rinks, but – unlike New York – you could return with bags of Christmas gifts... and a tan.
